Ed Varga

I grew up in a small Wisconsin town while devouring a steady diet of animated films, comic books and The Monkees.  This was before the days of streaming, DVDs or even VCRs, so I couldn’t watch my favorite movies at home.  All I had were the vinyl records of scores which became a way to transport myself and relive films like Star Wars in my mind.  I wore those records out listening, remembering the images, the story and especially the emotions.

A few years later, most of my time was spent in mall arcades or with my hand was glued to a game controller of my Atari 2600.  I spent countless hours filling my ears with the bleeps and music of Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Pac-Man and so many others that feel like a permanent part of my DNA.  And while I've enjoyed my time trying to survive various alien attacks and zombie apocalypses, it's the stories of games like Journey, Celeste, Florence, Omori and Stray that capture my heart.

As a composer I love collaborating with filmmakers and game developers using music and sound design that enhances the emotion and the experience and is memorable while staying out of the way of the dialogue and action.  I look forward to hearing about the story you want to tell and how my music and soundscape can help you bring out the tone and emotion you're looking for. I've worked in the world music for over 30 years as a musician, songwriter, event producer and audio engineer.

I’m a queer, transgender man. Back in the day or another lifetime ago, I was  the "head homo" at Homocore Minneapolis, where I produced live shows for touring queercore bands.  That led me to Olympia where I founded the queer music and arts festival Homo A Go Go, which showcased hundreds of queer artists from 2002-2009.
